Debbie: How long have you lived in New Jersey and is your family still there?
George: Yeah, I've lived in New Jersey for eighteen years from when I was born until I left for college.
When I went to college the first two years were in Philly and my house was just twenty minutes away
from Philly so I was home on weekends a lot. I was there until I moved to the west coast when I turned
twenty but my family is all still there, my parents, my grandparents, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins,
aunts, uncles....
Debbie: So do you go there often?
George: We go probably three, four, five times a year and actually my parents are here right now. They
just drove down from Jersey....
Debbie: I know the fourteen hour trip, we did that last year.
George: Yeah and they're at my house as we speak and this is their first time visiting us here in Nashville.
Debbie: So how are they liking it?
George: They love it! More than anything it's just for them to see the grandkids. They don't really care
about us. Haha. They just want to see the grandkids at this point.
Debbie: That's because they grow so fast.
George: Yeah, so they're just sitting on the couch and letting the kids crawl all over them and just having
fun.
Debbie: Just like I saw you in the video on your website.
George: Yeah, exactly - and then I'll take them around you know to see what it is that I do.
Debbie: They must be so proud.
George: Yeah they are. They're really proud and they express that all the time.
Debbie: What phenomenal parents.
George: They are, they really are!!
Debbie: I went on your website and I'm just thinking, you know you've gone through so much as a
child.
George: Yeah, exactly. They are loving and had so much love to share and they did.
Debbie: And look where you are now?
George: Yeah.
Debbie: Did you ever think wow God how did you put me here?
George: Yeah, oh all the time, all the time, in many ways I mean just to be alive even. I don't think that I
would've been alive if it weren't for them. My wife, my kids-yeah they really rescued me. So yeah I am very
blessed in many ways.
Debbie: That's so beautiful! Can you tell me about your wife and kids?
George: Yeah, uh my kids are 4, 5 and 6 now and two of them are in school and they're just our joy.
They're just at a fun age too at this stage of life as I've said about every stage. Right now I'm a hero, I walk
in the door and they are greeting me at the door with huge tight hugs and kisses and they're pulling my
luggage out from my hands and pulling me onto the floor and climbing on top of me and jumping off the
couch on top of me.
Debbie: Well you're just dad.
George: Yeah and my wife stands there patiently for a minute or two for her hello kiss. She's just there
and laughs and watches us make a mess of the house. All the cushions come off of the couch, all the
comforters and blankets that are stacked in the corner for snuggling, they come out and they were putting
those over each other. And uh-I mean just making a mess of the house and then my wife just sits there
and smiles and waits for her time. It's fun...we have a blast!!
Debbie: What a lovely family, they are so beautiful.
George: Thank you, thank you-yeah they're great!!
Debbie: So are you a PTA dad?
George: My wife takes a more active role in it but whenever I'm home I do as much as I can. I go in the
classroom and help teach a few times a week, um and I go to PTA meetings and they have fundraisers....
Debbie: You go dad-that's so cool.
George: I'm involved as much as time permits me to be. That's how my parents were. They were super
involved and this is a huge pay-off because of that. These years fly by quickly I hear and from what little
years we've had kids they have gone by quickly so I'm trying to be involved and have as many memories
of them as I can. I am absolutely obnoxious with my camera. I've got a little - I think I have a 256MB card in
mine, a tiny little camera, my pictures are a megabyte each and so I will easily go through 250 pictures in an
hour and then import them on my computer and go through another 250.
Debbie: Do you think that you'll be a supportive parent as your parents were?
George: Oh yeah, absolutely! I can't imagine not being in every way. Uh, you know it's still disciplining and
still helping them when they make mistakes and being there for them...but absolutely always!
Debbie: What about when they grow up and they decide they want to be a singer instead of a
lawyer?
George: Yeah, actually whatever they want to do I will be supportive of. Whatever they want to do but
that's so far away. Right now one of them wants to be a princess, one of them wants to be a super hero so
who knows.
Debbie: God blessed you with your parents that adopted you, obviously, how would you describe
them?
George: Uh loving with a solid faith, very practical, very down to earth, no frills. My mom worked in a
cafeteria in a college or cleaned houses when we were growing up. My dad worked in a factory and working
awful, awful shift work in the morning till four in the afternoon and the other twelve to eight-a blue collar job.
He worked that because he loved his family to pay the bills and to provide a great home for us and went to
every single soccer game, every choir program, every basketball game and every track meet. I mean they
went to....and they had four kids and they went to every single one of our stuff.
Debbie: Oh I have seen how many people you had in your extended family. What are your family
gatherings like?
George: Haha - it's fun. My mom has seven brothers and sisters and my dad is the oldest of thirteen kids.
All those aunts and uncles have at least four kids and some have about twelve, thirteen kids so on first
cousins alone I have one hundred and twenty. Now there are some like me who are grown and married and
have kids. They have two, three or four kids. I mean it's a ton of people.
Debbie: Do you have a big family reunion?
George: Yeah we do just about every year at some point. Then certainly when we come home my parents
try to get as many together as they can.
Debbie: Round them up...
George: Yeah it's a blast. We just barbecue outside and let the kids run wild and try to manage chaos. It's
fun and back at home I'm Georgie because I'm the third. My dad goes by George and so I've always been
Georgie and that's all I answer to and it would sound awkward if anyone there called me anything
but.....outside of that. At home it would sound odd if anyone called me George. I would think that someone
was mad at me or something. It's fun and they're proud of me and excited and it's almost like a homecoming
parade every time we go home. It's fun, it's just really fun.
Debbie: How long have you lived in Nashville?
George: About a year and a half and it's so nice to be embraced by this community of recording artists and
they're just sweet people.
Debbie: What was the process involved in signing with Rocketown?
George: It was a long - it seemed like it was long because when I started the signing process I had been
unemployed for a year and a half. You know I quit my job to try to go on the road and sing as much as I
could because I was unemployed during that time. Once Rocketown expressed interest then we started the
contract negotiation process but we could see a light at the end of the tunnel.
Debbie: You must've been so excited - I can't imagine that?
George: Yeah then there's still that process of my attorney and their attorney handling all the details.
Debbie: Did they approach you, did they want you or did they find you somewhere?
George: I've been to Nashville to do some shows and it was just a coincidence that several people in the
audience's that we were performing for went back to the president of the label and said oh we just heard
this guy George Rowe and you've got to check him out. I mean from his in laws, his wife's parents, his
brother's wife, Michael's manager, and just from lots of people. Then because I was here for a short time
visiting I kind of took the initiative to initiate conversation and introduce myself to a lot of people at labels. I
called and said my name is George Rowe and I'd like to drop off some music. Oh I can't believe that you're
calling me I just heard from this person and that person.
Debbie: Oh wow, God was opening up the doors that's what it was. That's amazing. Oh I love to see
him work. How involved were you with the making of your album "Think About That?"
George: Oh wholly involved. I wrote or co-wrote everything. I was there for the recording of all the sessions
even when there wasn't a vocal session, even when it was background vocals, what was being mixed, what
was being produced and I was there for the whole thing.
Well George was called away as he was scheduled to do a live interview for a radio station but it was a
pleasure to sit and chat with him. For more information you can log onto his website www.georgerowe.com
